Poor quality of teachers bane of poor education delivery -UBEC

The Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Dr. Hamid Bobboyi has said the poor quality of teachers is reasonable for poor education delivery.
Dr. Bobboyi made the assertion in a welcome address he presented in kaduna yesterday at the ongoing three days meeting of UBEC Management with Directors and Desk Officers in charge of training in the 36 State and Abuja.
According to him, studies have revealed that performance of learners in basic education has remained poor.
Dr. Bobboyi who was represented by the Director Admin and Supply Right Rev. Ediwin Musa Jarmai however said efforts had been made to improve the capacity of teachers through the use of different models in service training and the establishment of Department of Teachers Development in the Commission.
The Executive Secretary further said it is discovered that in some places learners in primary five and six are operating at beginner level in literacy skills
“This means that children are coming out of primary school without being better than how they were when they entered
“Some basic education teachers are deficient in the content knowledge of their subject areas and are not up to date in current instructional techniques.
“Some teachers failed test which they set and expect their pupils to pass “ He said
He however expressed dismay that results from such training have not been commensurated with the huge resources expended, saying teachers have not changed their ways of teaching and learner’s performance has remained low.
The Executive Secretary informed the gathering that teachers make huge difference between good and poor learning outcomes.
