Mortia Modise scored her 100th goal for Banyana Banyana to become the first female football player in South Africa to achieve this feat in the history of women’s football in the country.
Modise scored a brace against Algeria in a 5-1 victory on Saturday evening that saw South Africa qualify for the semifinals at the ongoing Africa Women’s Championship in Windhoek, Namibia.
The 31-year-old, who is the most capped South African player with 117 appearances under her belt, expressed joy at her achievement that has seen her rewrite history.
She is the only South African to score 100 goals for a national football team and this includes the men’s national football team Bafana Bafana.
Born in Soweto, Modise played for the under-19 side Basetsana Basetsana at the age of 13 and captained it before she was summoned for Banyana Banyana at the age of 15 in 2000.
