Senator George Akume

…. says Ghana experience won’t happen in Nigeria

By Jude Opara, Abuja

The Presidency yesterday confirmed that President Bola Tinubu will contest the 2027 presidential election.
It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume had last week urged northern politicians to perish their ambition of contesting for the presidency in 2027 because President Tinubu who is from the South will be contesting for his second term.
That position apparently did not go down well with some northern politicians and leaders including the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who admonished the government to focus delivering the dividends of democracy instead of talking of an election that is over two years away.
However, addressing newsmen in Abuja, the Special Adviser Public Communication and Media, Daniel Bwala said even as the President does not want to lose sight of his desire to provide the dividends of democracy to the people, he will not shy away from the need to continue in office post 2027, provided the Nigerian people decide to renew his mandate.
Bwala equally boasted that the administration of President Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) are not worried about the recent events in Ghana where the opposite party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated the ruling party in the just concluded presidential election in the West African country.
“Well for now Mr. President is focused on governance, delivering on the mandate and the promises to Nigerian people and he has refused to be distracted by political talk ahead of 2027.
“He is very focused on issues that bother on the Nigerian people, to make sure that people come out of hunger, to make sure that Agriculture brings about the expected revolution, to make sure that our people are able to deal with their everyday problems.
“So the time for politicking is not yet here and when that time comes, we are going to be ready for everyone.
“Mr. President’s agenda, which is working well is what will naturally endear Nigerians to vote him for the second term and Mr. President is more than eminently qualified constitutionally to contest for the second term in office, and God willing, if God gives Mr. President life and health, we do hope that Mr. President will run his course as provided by the constitution”.
Bwala also reassured Nigerians that the events that led to the defeat of the ruling party in Ghana are not the same with Nigeria because President Tinubu is putting in place measures that have started yielding results.
“Given comparative analysis, that is not to say, that I am blaming the government of Ghana, but there are divergent applications of government policy.
“If you have been following events and developments in Ghana, you see that over the last one year and if you follow the indices, you find out that it is not the same thing that is happening in the two countries considering what Mr. President is doing in redirecting the economy in the right path.
“Mr. President is very confident. The idea of the ruling party loosing the election, that will not happen, because Nigerian people are seeing what the administration is doing. Nigerian people only care about what they are confronted with every day. They don’t actually care whether you are white or black skin or whatever, what matters to them is if issues of their dinner table is dealt with, Nigerian people will always stay with you and that is what Mr. President is doing. That is why Mr. President is receiving commendations from every part of the country”.
