The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reportedly halted the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) elections scheduled to take place on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
According to a report by owngoalnigeria, the decision is believed to have followed the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after they were eliminated by South Africa in the African playoff in Morocco.
According to The Guardian, the NSC is expected to establish a three-month normalization committee to oversee the administration of Nigerian football during the interim period.
The proposed move comes after the Super Falcons missed out on the 2027 World Cup, ending Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the women’s tournament since its inaugural edition in China in 1991.
The NSC was reportedly given the go-ahead by FIFA after assuring FIFA President Gianni Infantino of Nigeria’s support for his bid to retain his position.
The commission is also said to have contacted CAF President Patrice Motsepe as it seeks to address the situation surrounding the country’s football administration.
The proposed normalization committee would be responsible for managing the NFF’s affairs for three months while efforts are made to resolve the issues surrounding the federation’s leadership and the planned elections.
