Former President Goodluck Jonathan at the weekend told hundreds of youths who thronged his office in Abuja beseeching him to join the 2023 presidential contest, that they should watchout and pray as the presidential nomination process unfolds.
Addressing the youths, who beared placards with various inscriptions like: ‘Goodluck Jonathan you must run in 2023’, ‘Jonathan stop wasting our time and declare for President’, ‘Jonathan we need you at Villa to continue the good work you started’, the Bayelsa born politician said youths should get involved in politics.
Jonathan said “For you to come this morning in this manner shows clearly that the youths are interested in politics.
“We have always been saying that the youths must get involved in the political process and luckily, the not-too-young-to-run bill has made it very clear that young people can contest almost every position in government.
“So, we will continue to encourage you to get involved in the political process and as long as many youths get involved in the political process, the more we will be able to get the government that we want.”
Speaking further, he charged the youths to pray that leaders who will carry the younger generation along in the scheme of things emerged in the 2023 general election.
“The country has been facing so many challenges, some of them started a very long time ago and I believe with the interest of the young people, these challenges would be dealt with. We will work very hard.
“Yes, you are calling me to come and declare for the next election. I cannot tell you I am declaring, the political process is ongoing, just watch out. But the key role you must play is to pray that Nigeria gets somebody that carries the young people along and somebody that can also work very hard to see that some of the problems we see are dealt with by the government and I believe that collectively, we will work together.”
