The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in has urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Abuja Municipal Area Council to reduce the taxes and levies imposed on private primary and secondary schools in the area.
Speaking during the annual end-of-year dinner of the association held recently in Abuja, the Chairperson of NAPPS FCT, Mrs Lilian Nwosu, said that private schools’ owners would continue to work closely with the government in order to get children out of the streets and educated.
She said, “Education is a critical investment in the human capital of any nation, which government has been unable to handle alone, hence the inevitable private investors’ participation in the sector.
“Equally, it is to the credit of private educators in the FCT that the best candidates in the recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination, National Examinations Council Examination and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination were products of our various schools.
“It is on this note that I hereby reiterate our call on both FCT and the management of the AMAC to reduce the taxes and levies being imposed on private schools, so that our members can remain in service and continue to assist in the education of our children. We also call for a scheme that will provide free teaching aids and training work-shops for our teachers.”
Nwosu added that the association’s agenda for 2020 include appointing a committee to mop up the less privileged children roaming the streets of Abuja and encouraging schools to run qualitative teaching methodologies compliant with best global practices.
