Former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar has distributed N105 million worth foodstuffs and clothing to five thousand orphans selected from the seventeen emirates of the state.
Speaking during the flag off ceremony (today) yesterday in Gusau the state capital, ex Governor Yari, who was represented by his former Commissioner for religious affairs, Malam Maharazu Mafara, said the exercise will be continuous annually.
Maharazu said, the idea of feeding the selected 5000 orphans from across the seventeen emirates of the state especially during Ramadan period was to assist alleviate hardship they might have faced in abject poverty which was caused by too many economic crisis.
He further claimed he was compelled to embark on the feeding exercise having noticed that, the 2021 programme for annual feeding of the orphans was skipped by the concern authorities in the state thereby leaving them (the orphans) stranded as prices of commodities were still rising.
“I have started when I was in power as Governor of the state with 6,000 orphans in 2011, but the figure had risen to 40,000 in 2019 when I was rounding up my second tenure, now I am back again to continue from where I stopped because I can not watch orphans dying in hunger”, Yari has assured.
According to the distribution list,166 female orphans and 111 male orphans bringing their total number to 277 from each of the seventeen emirates would benefit two and half measures of rice and sugar, and six measures each between corn and millet, and brocade or wrapper respectively.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the distribution committee, Sanusi Liman DanAlhaji, said 277 brocade and wrappers were provided alongside N1000 as suing fare to all the 5,000 beneficiaries across the seventeen emirates in the state.
