Following the commencement of Ramadan this week, traders in Dawanau International Grains Market, Kano State, have supplied grains worth over N10 million to Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state, for distribution to the needy in area.
The grains donated include: sorghum, millet, maize,rice, beans and soybeans.
The President of the trader association, Alhaji Muntaka Isah, disclosed this while presenting the foodstuff to the Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Dr Kabiru Danguguwa.
Isah said the aim of the gesture was to cushion the effects of the economic hardships being faced by the people in the area.
He said the materials being presented included beans,rice,millet,and maize.
He appealed to the local government to expedite action in ensuring that the grains reached the needy.
In his remarks, Danguguwa,represented by the Vice Chairman,Alhaji Ahmed Chedi, thanked the association for the gesture and assured of the commitment of the local government in ensuring that the grains reached the intended beneficiaries
“There will be no discrimination during the distribution of these grains ,provided you are from Dawakin Tofa Local Government and you are among the needy ,the gesture will be extended to you irrespective of the political party you belong, “ he said.
He appealed to wealthy individuals and philanthropists to emulate the association by extending such gestures to the needy.
Dawanau is the biggest grains market in the West African sub-region supplying grains to such countries as Nigeria, Niger,Chad,Bourkina Faso, Cameroon and the Central African Republic.
The market also supplies the World Food Programme(WFP) with 80 to 85 percent of the foodstuff it supplies to IDPs camps across Nigeria.
