Rangers celebrating the qualification on Friday  Nigeria champions, Rangers International FC will battle MC Alger in the final preliminary round of the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League.

The fixture was confirmed on Saturday after the Algerian powerhouses MC fired an ominous warning shot across the bows of Nigeria’s Rangers International F.C., dismantling Niger Republic’s ASN Nigelec 5-0 in Algiers to comfortably secure their place in the second and final preliminary round of the Africa elite league competition

Following a cagey, goalless draw in Niamey during the first leg, the Algerian champions left nothing to chance on home soil. They unleashed a clinical attacking masterclass on Saturday at the Stade Ali-la-Pointe, overwhelming Nigelec to progress with an emphatic 5-0 aggregate scoreline.

With this victory, MC Alger set up a mouthwatering, high-stakes final qualifying tie against the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Enugu Rangers.

The “Flying Antelopes” earned their spot in the second round by surviving a grueling penalty shootout drama against Benin Republic’s AS Sobemap. After battling to a 2-2 aggregate draw across two legs, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties in Lomé on Friday.

While Rangers faced an intense emotional rollercoaster to sneak through, MC Alger’s effortless cruise through the first round signals that the Nigerian champions will face a massive step up in opposition. CAF has already designated MC Alger among the highest-ranked entrants in these preliminary stages, underlining the monumental challenge awaiting Rangers.

The stakes could not be higher for both continental heavyweights. The winner of this two-legged blockbuster will automatically qualify for the lucrative 16-team CAF Champions League group stage, keeping alive their dream of competing for the record-breaking $6 million grand prize.

The first leg of the tie is scheduled between October 16–18, 2026 with Rangers hosting while the return leg will hold  Hosted by Rangers International between October 23–25, 2026 in Algiers.

Rangers are desperate to restore their reputation as a dominant African force and surpass their 2024 failure to reach the group stages. However, to do so, Coach Ilechukwu and his squad must figure out how to tame an MC Alger side that has already shown it knows exactly how to tear defensive units apart.
