Relief for residents as Karu 15km road ends decades of traffic, flooding woes

For years, commuting along the Karu corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was a grueling test of patience.

The crucial link between the Abuja-Keffi Expressway and key inner areas was notorious for crippling gridlock, dilapidated stretches, and severe seasonal flooding that routinely brought business and transit to a standstill. Today, that narrative has completely shifted.

Following the completion and official commissioning of the 15-kilometer road network, residents, business owners, and commuters across Karu are celebrating a major infrastructure victory.

The newly upgraded road network stretches from the Karu Interchange on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway to the Customs Clinic Junction. The scope of work covers several key arterial routes, including DSS Road, NIA Road, EFCC Road, Primus Hospital Road, and Old CBN Quarters Road. The modern infrastructure upgrades feature full dualization, heavy-duty drainage systems, and streetlighting. Indigenous firm Abdul-Val Nigeria Limited, also known as Abduval Limited, was awarded the project on August 22, 2025, and delivered the completed network well ahead of schedule.

The transformation has brought immediate operational and economic relief to the surrounding communities. Local school teacher, Anita Ogunwunmi noted that the elimination of bottlenecks completely transformed her morning routine, allowing her to leave home much later for work without the fear of getting stuck in gridlock or heavy rainfall.

Similarly, Mrs. Chinyere Obasi, a local shopkeeper, highlighted the immediate boost to small businesses and nighttime security, stating that the new streetlights and smooth pavement have significantly improved foot traffic and movement.

Also, a motorist,  Johnpaul Adamu praised the corridor’s city-grade upgrade, observing that the vibrant streetlighting makes the area feel bright and safe even at midnight.

Interestingly, beyond easing traffic, the project stands out as a strong showcase for local execution. Project Manager for Abdul-Val Nigeria Limited, Hacı Cengiz, noted that the firm mirrored its previous fast-track delivery of the Ushafa road project by executing the Karu dualization project at full capacity.

There is no gainsaying that the initiative generated significant direct employment by hiring 259 workers, with the vast majority recruited straight from the host community.

This construction workforce boosted the local micro-economy by patronizing local food vendors and service providers throughout the project duration.

Expectedly, Cengiz commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for trusting local firms, emphasizing that supporting indigenous contractors ensures heavy machinery, technical expertise, and capital remain entirely within the Nigerian economy.

Glaringly, for the people of Karu, the completed project represents far more than fresh asphalt. It marks the end of seasonal isolation, shorter daily commutes, and a revitalized commercial gateway into the nation’s capital.
