Reps advocate training for medical personnel

The House of Representatives, Tuesday asked the federal government to as a matter of urgency commence regular training of healthcare personnel in the public sector for effective service delivery.

The House equally urged the Federal Ministry of Health to conduct mandatory customer service training in all public hospitals and health facilities periodically.

The House resolutions followed the adoption of a motion moved on the floor of the House by Chinedu Emeka Martins  during yesterday plenary .

Presenting the motion,  the Lawmaker noted that quality of service delivery is crucial in healthcare management, especially in government hospitals.

Hon.Emeka Martins lamented that cases of negligence and impoliteness have been reported in government hospitals, leading to loss of confidence in the public hospitals.

The State Coordinator of Family Planning, Mrs. Docas Dalhatu made this known Monday in Minna at the TCI/ The Challenge Initiative Media Roundtable on the theme; ‘Maintaining Demand for Family Planning Commodities During Covid -19 lockdown’. She explained that 920,632, 000 different types of contraceptives was distributed to public health service providers in the 25 local government councils in the state, added that the seat at home order had brought couples together consistently hence the high demand for sex. The coordinator noted that family planning commodities distributed within the Covid-19 includes; 11,000 Jadelle, 14,760 Microgyen, 15,000 Nonis, 77,600 vias of Depo, 796,000 Male condoms, 3,072 cycle of Micolit and 3,200 pieces of Sayana pess making it a total of 920,632, 000 distributed. Mrs. Dalhatu noted that during the period under review the state health facilities requested for more Family Planning Commodities due to higher demand, therefore family planning should not be stopped as government ordered for the supply of the commodities. She further called for continued media support in educating, informing and enlightening the general public on the need to adopt family planning especially on its benefits to the health of women, family and the entire society. She pointed out that it’s better to save lives through training and educating the youths and adolescent to prevent untimely death through self-abortion due to unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancy which can lead to children that will grow without love and becomes nuisance in the society.

He stressed “The Federal government has invested a lot in recent times to restore public confidence in the country’s healthcare system and boost patronage while driving the government’s agenda of fighting diseases and ensuring a healthy workforce.

“If public healthcare workers across the country are not re-trained on interpersonal skills, time management, and customer relationship management, Nigeria may face further rot in the healthcare sector, which could adversely affect the economy”.

He said that most patients prefer to seek medical treatment in privately run clinics and health facilities in preference to government hospitals.

“The alleged poor customer service delivery, negligence and unnecessary procedural hurdles would further erode public confidence and deplete patronage of the public healthcare system”.
