The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Ministry of Aviation to construct a security fence at all federal airports across the country.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Mr. Bede Eke (Imo, PDP) during plenary.
Eke explained that the expanse and porous nature of the nation’s airports makes for easy access for hoodlums and animals thereby giving rise to security breaches.
He also decried the numerous cases of stowaways at the airports which has led to many deaths.
The lawmaker said “the rampant cases of stray animals and sometimes humans on the runways of Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Imo state and other airports in the country would have ended in fatalities but for the dexterity of the pilots”.
According to him, under Annex 17 of the International Civil Aviation’s Standard Procedures, every Airport is supposed to be protected by a security fence and not a perimeter fence as is the case in major airports in the country.
The motion was adopted by the house through a voice vote put up by Speaker Yakubu Dogara while committees on Aviation and Legislative Compliance were mandated to ensure compliance.
