FCT residents have been experiencing an extreme and unbearable harsh weather condition which they described as disturbing.
Some residents, who spoke about the condition, wondered why there was no harmattan, that is usually associated with cold weather in Abuja as it has been in the past during the dry season.
This, they however said could be attributable to climate change Recall that prevailing heat wave which is not peculiar to the capital city as residents in neighbouring north central states equally battle to survive the intense weather condition, has been worsened by the unavailability of power supply.
Also, the residents lamented that the recent hike in the price of fuel has further aggravated their misery due to their inability to afford it to power their power generating set.
The situation has left residents frustrated as they lamented how difficult it has been surviving the heat.
They however, appealed to the government to intervene by ensuring steady power supply or make fuel affordable.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), there is an increased risk of fires and heat-related health problems as temperatures rise across much of the country.
The agency , in a recent statement by Manzo Ezekiel, NEMA’s Head of Press and Public Relations, highlighted that the current heatwave heightens the likelihood of fires and health complications, urging citizens to take precautionary measures.
It noted that the current high temperatures have been corroborated by forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which predicts the heatwave will likely persist.
“The recent surge in daily temperatures in several regions of the country has prompted NEMA to caution on the heightened risks of fires and health challenges associated with extreme heat”, the statement added.
