By Musa Baba Adamu

Senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District, Shehu Lawan Kaka has called for the review of Nigerian laws, saying such has not been done for the past 19 years.

In a motion he sponsored, which was debated on the floor of the upper legislative Chamber on Tuesday, the lawmaker said there was a need to review, update and compile the laws in their alphabetical order for ease of reference, particularly those laws that are operative in Nigeria.

Senator Kaka reminded the chamber that it was the lawmakers who possessed the power of approval for the Office of the Attorney-General to review Nigerian laws, which he said was long overdue.

The last review, the lawmaker pointed out, was in 2004, which he said was approved vide “Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria} Act, 2007 and which repealed the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990).

He said: “Worried that the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 have not been revised nineteen years after, with the implication that the several laws enacted in Nigeria from 1st January 2003 till date remain excluded from the compilation.

Senators spoke in favour of the motion and unanimously agreed to the onus of responsibility on the part of the National Assembly to do a review.
