Russia-Sahel security deal sparks terrorist influx in Nigeria, says Shehu Sani

Former Senator Shehu Sani has linked the increase in terrorism in Nigeria to a security agreement between Russia and Sahelian countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.

In a post on his verified X account, Sani stated that since the deal was the initiated, terrorists from these countries have begun relocating their bases to Nigeria.

Sani stressed that these terrorists should be denied any refuge in Nigeria, asserting, “They should be denied any breathing space in our country by all means necessary.”

This statement comes as Nigeria continues to struggle with numerous incidents of insecurity, including the abduction of women and schoolchildren, with some victims being killed in the process.

Sani’s comments followed recent US airstrikes on terrorist targets in Northwest Nigeria, which he described as a “conscionable action” if conducted in collaboration with Nigerian authorities.  ever, he cautioned against over-reliance on foreign powers, emphasizing that Nigeria must take responsibility for its own security.

Other respondents have suggested that the international community can support Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism without compromising national sovereignty. They advocate for structured security cooperation, intelligence sharing, and strategic coordination.

This approach, they argue, should prioritize Nigeria’s security needs while respecting its sovereignty, as emphasized by the Nigerian government.

Key areas of support include; exchange of intelligence to help Nigeria identify and disrupt terrorist networks, collaborative planning and execution of counter-terrorism operations, assistance in strengthening Nigeria’s security institutions and intelligence capabilities, and providing aid to affected communities and promoting economic development.

It is crucial for international partners, including the US, to prioritize human rights and minimize civilian harm in their support efforts.
