The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RUWASSA) Directorate in conjunction with UNICEF recently celebrated the world Toilet Day in Kwali Area Council.
The event which took place at the palace of Etsu Kwali was attended by the royal fathers, ward leaders, religious leaders and the youths among others. The theme of this year’s World Toilet Day was “Toilet for Peace”.
Speaking to newsmen at the occasion, the Head of Department of Sanitation in charge of RUWASSA in the FCT, Aisha B. charged the residents to endeavor to stop open defecation for the sake of their safety.
She also urged the residents to deem it necessary to construct toilets in their houses, pointing out that the people of Kwali central ward were certified to be open free defecation.
According to her, RUWASSA has been piloting for the eradication of open defecation for 2 years now in Kwali Area Council.
She, therefore, disclosed that some youths were mobilized to enlighten the people of Kwali on the danger of open defecation.
Also speaking, the representative of UNICEF, Mr. Suzanne George, who is also the FCT RUWASSA, called on the traditional rulers and critical stakeholders to deem it fit to preach against open defecation.
On his part, the Desk office of RUWASSA in Kwali, Mr. Usman O. Sunday, noted that as Kwali Central Ward was certified free of open defecation, he said plans are underway to sensitize the people of the remaining 9 wards in Kwali on the need to put a stop to open defecation.
Not left out, the Co-ordinator of Wash in Kwali, Dada Aminat Adetola, counseled the people to cultivate the habit of hand washing after the defecation.
Meanwhile, the occasion featured the presentation of awards to the deserving people.
