Sanusi: Normalcy returns to Kano

Date:

Normalcy has returned to the ancient city of Kano yesterday, following two days of protest by some irate youths opposed to the appointment of former Central Bank Governor (CBN), Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new emir of Kano.

Our correspondent observed that normalcy has returned in most part of the old city that witnessed violent protest for two days, as motorist were seen plying major roads without being molest.
More shops in the city were seen open, as against Monday, where so many shop-owners closed their shops for fear of being attacked and their shops looted by hoodlums.

Malam Rabilu Inuwa, who operates a mini-shop near the Emir’ s Palace told our reporter that he is happy the situation has improved such that he could open his shop.
“The situation is better today (yesterday), unlike Monday and the day before, whereby I wouldn’t have open my shop; but we thank God that people have realized that peace is the ultimate thing we need in the state and the nation to develop.”

Kano state Police Public Relation Officer, ASP Musa Magaji Majiya said the Police is on top of the situation, urging residents to be law abiding and desist from fomenting trouble.
Recall that protests broke out at the weekend, shortly after the state government announced the appointment of the former CBN governor as the 57 emir of Kano.
The aggrieved youths who took to streets protesting the pronouncement of the state government, gathered in the front of the Emir’s Palace and proceeded to the Government House, setting bonfires along major roads that lead to Government House, destroying traffic and street lights.
The protest continued on Monday morning, even as the state governor, Engineer Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso presented the new emir with a letter of appointment.
