A security guard, Uduak Koffi, was at the weekend charged before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing his employer’s jewelry valued at N2 million.

Koffi, who lives with his employer at 29, Adetoro Ipaye Street, Graceland Estate, Ajah, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on March 28 at his employer’s residence.

He said the stole jewelry valued at N2 million from the complainant, Mrs. Zuliat Unubun.

“The accused and the housekeeper, who is still at large, jointly committed the offences. The housekeeper stole the jewelry and kept it with the accused. The housekeeper disappeared with some of the jewelry, while she left some with the accused,” Nwosu told the court.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. E.B. Dawodu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

She said one of the sureties should pay N100, 000 into the account of the court’s chief registrar.

She also said the sureties should show an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year imprisonment for stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years jail term for conspiracy.

The magistrate adjourned further hearing in the case to June 2. (NAN)
