SEDC: Nkwonta Pushes South-East Development Drive,as Commission Builds Capacity for Regional Revival

Date:

The South-East Development Commission (SEDC) is positioning itself to confront decades of infrastructural deficits, stimulate economic growth and unlock investment opportunities across the region, with the development of its headquarters in Enugu expected to strengthen its capacity to deliver on its mandate.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on SEDC, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, gave the indication during an oversight visit by members of the committee to the Commission’s headquarters, where they assessed ongoing works and the level of infrastructure development.
Nkwonta described the facility as a critical institutional foundation for translating the historic Three Rs policy of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation, introduced after the Nigerian Civil War, into concrete development outcomes for the South-East.
He said the Commission presented a fresh opportunity to address the lingering consequences of the civil war, years of infrastructural neglect and development challenges confronting the five states of the region.
According to him, the SEDC must go beyond institutional establishment to deliver measurable interventions in critical sectors, particularly infrastructure, economic development and community rebuilding.
He stressed that strategic investments in federal roads, public infrastructure and urban development would be essential to accelerating regional growth and improving the living conditions of the people.
Providing further insight into the significance of the project, the Managing Director of SEDC, Mr. Mark Okoye, disclosed that the Commission’s four-storey headquarters, donated by the Enugu State Government, would significantly improve its operational efficiency and institutional capacity.
Okoye explained that the facility would bring the Commission’s departments, management and staff under one roof, strengthening coordination, reducing administrative bottlenecks and improving the execution of development programmes.
He noted that the centralised arrangement would also promote effective planning and enable the Commission to implement long-term regional development strategies more efficiently.
Beyond administrative convenience, the Managing Director said the rent-free facility would substantially reduce the Commission’s operational and real estate expenses, freeing up resources for critical development priorities, including road construction and community-based projects.
On efforts to stimulate the region’s economy, Okoye highlighted the South-East Venture Capital Programme, launched in May 2026, as a major intervention aimed at supporting young technology innovators, establishing innovation hubs and creating economic opportunities for the region’s youthful population.
He said the initiative was also designed to address the growing migration of young talents from the South-East to major economic centres such as Lagos and Abuja by creating an enabling environment for innovation, entrepreneurship and investment within the region.
Okoye further disclosed that the headquarters would strengthen the Commission’s capacity to attract private-sector investment through the proposed South-East Investment Company.
According to him, the proposed investment platform would connect private investors, members of the diaspora and other funding sources with viable development projects across the five states.
He expressed optimism that effective institutional coordination, strategic partnerships and sustained investment would enable the Commission to accelerate regional development, expand economic opportunities and position the South-East as a competitive investment destination.
The oversight visit was part of the National Assembly’s constitutional responsibility to monitor the activities, projects and performance of the Commission and ensure that it delivers on its mandate of promoting the socio-economic development of the South-East.
