Seven killed in midnight attack on Benue IDP camp

Seven persons were yesterday murdered by armed herders at the Internally Displaced Persons camp located at Abagena, Makurdi local government of Benue State.
According to a victim, David Avese the herders invaded the camp at 12 midnight shooting sporadically as the IDPs scampled for safety.
“They also, attacked the adjoining village and in the process left over 7 persons dead and several others injured. I lost a son and three children are injured. My 6 year old child was matcheted.I cannot believe they attacked us even when we are displaced. They were more than 10 herders”, Avese lamented.
Following the sad incident, angry youths blocked the Laifia-Makurdi Federal high way as they made bonfire and lay the corpses on the high way which caused heavy traffic hold up. It took the timely intervention of Governor Samuel Ortom who pleaded with the IDPs to vacate the road.
The iDPs were also, seen leaving the camps in large numbers even as there is panic in North bank area of Makurdi metropolis. People were seen relocating to other parts of the State capital.
Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Beenue State Teaching Hospital while the injured are also, receiving treatment at the same hospital.
