The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has appointed Professor Ahmad Bello Dogarawa as its new Secretary-General, following the death of his predecessor, Mallam Nafiu Baba Ahmad.
The appointment was announced on Saturday in a statement by the council’s President, Sheikh Professor Bashir Aliyu Umar.
The council said the appointment was aimed at strengthening its institutional leadership, advancing its objectives and promoting Islamic ideals through scholarship, advocacy and constructive engagement in national affairs.
Dogarawa is a Professor of Accounting at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and an Islamic scholar whose areas of interest include Islamic jurisprudence, economics, non-interest finance, social development and national peace-building.
He holds a PhD in Accounting and Finance from ABU and a master’s degree in Banking and Finance from Bayero University, Kano.
He is also a Fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria and a Certified Management Trainer.
According to the council, Dogarawa has made significant contributions to Islamic scholarship and the development of Muslim institutions in the country.
It said his engagements had focused on countering extremist ideologies, promoting peaceful coexistence and strengthening Islamic institutions.
The council also identified his experience in university administration, institutional governance, policy formulation and professional development as relevant to his new responsibilities.
It expressed confidence that his intellectual depth, professional experience and commitment to Islamic values would strengthen its institutional capacity and advance its mission.
The council urged its members, Islamic organisations, Muslim scholars, traditional institutions and the wider Muslim community to support the new Secretary-General in discharging his duties.
It also prayed for divine wisdom, strength and guidance for Dogarawa as he assumes office.
The council paid tribute to the late Nafiu Baba Ahmad, describing him as a committed servant of Islam and humanity.
It said his contributions would remain indelibly etched in the history of the council and the country.
The council further prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.
