A civil society group has urged politicians in Anambra State to avoid hate speech and disinformation as the November 2025 governorship election draws closer.

The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) issued the warning in a statement signed by its executive director, Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, on Thursday.

The organisation cautioned political actors, particularly candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), against making inflammatory remarks that could inflame tensions and threaten peace.

“Hate speech and fake news pose a serious danger to democracy and social cohesion,” the group said, stressing that divisive rhetoric undermines trust and weakens the foundations of a stable society.

SIDEC called on candidates to focus their campaigns on issues that matter to voters, such as insecurity, economic growth, and governance, rather than resorting to smear tactics.

The NGO added that political leaders carry a responsibility to set the tone for peaceful elections by embracing respect, tolerance, and cooperation in their engagements.

According to the group, fostering dialogue and understanding among rivals will not only create a healthier political environment but also boost voter confidence and participation in the democratic process.

“Anambra must once again show leadership in democratic conduct,” the statement said .
