The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, has intensified efforts to strengthen community policing and operational efficiency through an extensive tour of five local government areas in the state.
The tour covered Kebbe, Tambuwal, Shagari, Yabo and Bodinga LGAs, in line with the community policing directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Sokoto by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i.
According to the statement, the police commissioner combined visits to police divisions with town hall meetings and consultations with traditional rulers and key stakeholders to assess security challenges, strengthen police-community relations and improve tactical responses to emerging threats.
The statement said CP Shaffa held meetings with traditional rulers and community leaders across the affected LGAs, urging them to sustain collaboration with the police through intelligence sharing and early conflict resolution.
“He acknowledged the critical role of traditional institutions as custodians of local intelligence and appealed for continued support in identifying suspicious movements and preventing security breaches,” the statement said.
During visits to divisional headquarters, the commissioner reportedly conducted inspections on duty rosters, arms handling procedures and response mechanisms to distress calls.
He commended officers for their dedication while ordering immediate corrective measures in areas where operational lapses were identified.
Addressing youths, women groups, transport unions and vigilante organisations during the engagements, the CP emphasized that community policing requires active partnership between residents and security agencies.
He reassured residents of the command’s zero tolerance for extortion, intimidation and other forms of professional misconduct by police personnel.
The commissioner further stressed that effective policing must go beyond enforcement to include prevention, dialogue and collective responsibility.
According to the statement, the IGP had directed all police commands nationwide to strengthen community liaison structures, establish feedback mechanisms and promote joint patrols with local security committees.
“The IGP has given clear marching orders that every officer must become a community asset. These engagements are operational and aimed at addressing the concerns of the people,” CP Shaffa was quoted as saying.
Traditional rulers and community stakeholders reportedly commended the initiative, describing the police commissioner’s presence as a morale booster capable of deterring criminal activities.
The Sarkin Kabin Kebbe, Alhaji Lawali Labbo Margay, praised the proactive engagement and pledged continued support for security agencies.
The statement added that similar commitments were received from stakeholders in Tambuwal and Shagari, who promised to revive neighborhood watch groups to complement police operations.
At the end of the tour, CP Shaffa directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to submit actionable community policing plans within seven days, based on feedback gathered during the town hall meetings.
He also ordered intensified patrols along inter-LGA border communities, particularly in Kebbe and Tambuwal areas.
The commissioner appealed to residents to continue supporting the police and other security agencies with timely and credible information to improve security across the state.
