Sokoto: Gagi residents raise funds for Community Health Insurance Scheme

As part of moves to complement government efforts in providing social amenities in their area, residents of Gagi community, a suburb area of Sokoto state capital have donated about N500, 000 through levies in order to improve healthcare standard of the residents.

The funds according to the donors are to be used for the establishment of a Community Health Insurance Scheme and other self-help projects within the area.

Speaking with Journalists in his palace, the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar added that the fund will be used for the execution of other self-help projects across the community which is located some few kilometres east of Sokoto City.

He also said that the people of the area had already opened a dedicated bank account used by the members of the community for monthly donations into a special fund meant for the execution of the scheme.

According to Umar, the health insurance scheme will focus on the provision of free medicare to pregnant women, children below the age of five and other indigent members of the community.

The district head, further explained that other self-help projects to be executed using the fund will focus on education, water and electricity supply, security and other social needs of the residents.

He also advised the government to integrate the existing Islamiyya schools into the modern teaching and learning.
