Sokoto PDP Crisis Deepens as State Exco Rejects ‘Wike Faction’ Suspension, Threatens Legal Action

The Sokoto State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed its purported suspension by a faction of the party reportedly aligned with former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, describing the move as null, void and unconstitutional.
The state chairman of the party, Alhaji Muhammadu Bello Goronyo, told journalists in Sokoto on Wednesday that the executives remain the legitimate leadership, insisting they were duly elected and cannot be removed outside due legal process.
“A political party is an institution governed by law. We were duly elected in October 2024 for a four-year tenure which expires in October 2028. We have not committed any offence to warrant this alleged suspension,” he said.
Goronyo stressed that only a court of competent jurisdiction could remove them from office, adding that the executives only became aware of the alleged dissolution through social media reports.
“We are not deterred. As far as we are concerned, we are still in charge and discharging our mandate. We will meet and take appropriate actions, including legal steps, in line with the laws of the land,” he added.
The development follows a directive reportedly issued by a faction of the PDP dissolving the Sokoto State Executive Committee and appointing a caretaker committee.
The caretaker committee is said to be chaired by Hon. Hayatu Tafiya, with Alhaji Ahmed S. Pawa serving as secretary.
The letter announcing the dissolution, dated April 27, 2026, was reportedly signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed.
The latest development underscores the deepening internal crisis within the PDP, with rival factions laying claim to party structures across key states.
