The Sokoto State Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Police Force and in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i.
According to the statement, the newly established unit replaces existing tactical formations and is designed to provide swift, intelligence-driven, and professional responses to kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, and other violent crimes across the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, described the initiative as a major step towards modern, accountable, and community-based policing anchored on professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.
Shaffa also announced the appointment of SP Nasuru Isah as Commander of the unit.
The VCRU headquarters is located at the State Command Headquarters in Sokoto, with three operational sectors created to strengthen security coverage across the state. The sectors include the Eastern Axis, Central Axis, and Northern Axis.
The Command disclosed that personnel deployed to the unit underwent rigorous screening, vetting, and specialised training in intelligence-led operations, lawful use of force, firearm handling, range exercises, and protection of citizens’ rights.
The police further warned that unlawful stop-and-search operations, harassment, profiling, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated.
To ensure accountability and transparency, the Command established a dedicated complaints mechanism, including a hotline — 08032861946 — and a complaints desk at the Police Public Relations Office, State Command Headquarters, Sokoto.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through professional, humane, and intelligence-driven policing, while urging residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information.
