The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, on Tuesday, declared the 10th House ready to tackle key national reforms as lawmakers resumed from their 2025 annual recess.
In his welcome address at the resumption plenary, the Speaker outlined an ambitious legislative agenda centered on constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, women’s representation, security restructuring, and economic revitalization.
Abbas described the resumption as a “pivotal midpoint” in the life of the 10th Assembly, noting that while meaningful progress had been made, Nigerians expect “deliberate action that improves their daily lives.”
He said the House had recorded historic productivity between June 2023 and mid-2025, considering 2,263 bills, passing 237, with 50 receiving Presidential assent — covering reforms in power, student loans, cybersecurity, tax policy, and regional development.
“Our midterm review confirms that the 10th House of Representatives has been the most productive since 1999,” Abbas stated, adding that collaboration with the Executive had produced timely budgets and aligned policy outcomes “without compromising legislative independence.”
On the nation’s economy, the Speaker noted cautious optimism, citing a fifth consecutive decline in inflation to 20.12%, improved food inflation, and the restoration of UAE visa services and Emirates flights, which he said reopened avenues for trade and travel.
