Nigeria’s Special Mining Marshals have been commended for their pivotal role in combating illegal mining, a practice that threatens the nation’s economic potential and environmental sustainability.
The Director-General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, Engr. Obadiah Nkom, praised the marshals for their bravery and resilience during a recent engagement.
Nkom highlighted their integrity and dedication despite challenges, including financial inducements, personal threats, and intense pressure.
“These marshals are the backbone of our fight against illegal mining. Their sacrifices have been instrumental in achieving the successes recorded by the Mining Cadastre Office,” Nkom stated.
As part of efforts to strengthen the sector, the Commander of the Special Mining Marshals, John Onoja Attah, presented the marshals’ 2025 Strategic Operational Plans to the Mining Cadastre Office.
The initiative focuses on improving field operations, enhancing regulatory compliance, and fostering closer collaboration to curb illegal mining activities.
During the meeting, Nkom announced plans to automate the Cadastre Office’s services, a move aimed at improving license verification processes, enhancing transparency, and streamlining service delivery. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting the marshals and strengthening the country’s mining sector.
John Onoja Attah affirmed the marshals’ determination to intensify their crackdown on illegal mining in 2025, ensuring that legitimate mineral titleholders can access their resources without interference.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Cadastre Office in addressing environmental and community challenges tied to unauthorized mining.
Nkom underscored Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth and the need for partnerships to foster economic growth, attract investments, and drive innovation. He expressed optimism that with the marshals’ renewed efforts and strategic planning, Nigeria could position itself as a global leader in minerals and energy development.
