There seems to be a new twist to why a staff of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Malam Waziri Isa Adam, failed to complete his PhD degree at the University of Lagos 14 years after enrolment for the programme.
Mallam Adam in a statement on 9th June 2024 alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala had secretly requested the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos to withhold his academic records, effectively halting my progress.
According to him, he secured TETFUND funding for PhD program at the University of Lagos and the university-supported program during Professor Abdullahi Mustapha’s tenure.
He added that In 2021 and 2022, he requested permission to complete his program, but Professor Kabiru Bala denied him twice, despite his willingness to self-fund.
“Only after pressure from his friend whom he contracted to reconcile us, Idris Mamu, publisher of Desert Herald, did Professor Kabiru Bala agree to allow me to proceed, but with conditions.”
In a sharp reaction the Management of the University refuted the allegations of Adam fingering the institution of his failure to complete his PhD degree at the University of Lagos 14 years after enrolment for the programme.
In a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Office of Vice-Chancellor, of ABU Auwalu Umar, the University Management stated that the wishy-washy manner in which he presented his PhD update was captured in the release simply to deceive the public.
The statement added that Malam Adam has been an Assistant Lecturer since 28th January 2009 after his upgrade from Graduate Assistant following the completion of his MSc Mass Communication degree from the University of Lagos.
The statement further stated that he has been on that rank for well over 15 years now because of his inability to meet the institution’s academic promotion requirements.
“He joined the services of Ahmadu Bello University as a full-time staff on the rank of Graduate Assistant on 20th February 2006.”
