From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone A has warned some Kano state government officials to stay clear of the affairs of National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS).
NANS, in a press conference, led by Comrade Ziya’u Sarki, its Deputy Coordinator, held in Kano state yesterday, raised the alarm over the interference of some officials of Kano state government to the new leadership of the NAKSS.
Although he did not identify the government officials, Sarki alleged that they challenged the emergence of Yahaya Usman Kabo, the new NAKSS President, who was voted last year and inaugurated on 10th April, 2021.
According to him, the new President was legitimately voted by the majority of members of the union, having fulfilled all constitutional requirements, and sworn-in by the Kano state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.
He therefore declared that any announcement or directive challenging the legitimacy of the emmergence of the new President “is a nullity and cannot be allowed to stand, let alone by Nigerian students who have an unblemished record of resistance to dictatorial tendencies and undemocratic resolutions.”
Sarki said “sequel to complaints lodged by students organizations and individuals, we are however disturbed and displeased as an organization owing to the provocative and unwarranted attack on the just constituted leadership of National Association of Kano State Students buy some elements under Kano state government.
“ Instructively, we wish to call attention of those government officials and their cohorts to understand that leadership in students’ organizations only comes from students themselves through elections, in line with the provisions of the NANS Chater of Demands and the Constitution of NAKSS respectively.
“So far, NANS have recognized the emergence of Comr. Yahaya Usman as the legitimate President of Kano state students, having fulfilled all constitutional requirements and voted by the majority of Kano students at the just concluded NAKSS Convention, last year, and was inaugurated on the 19th April, 2021,by Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice,” he said.
The Deputy Coordinator added that NANS is hereby dissociate itself with any person or group of persons working to destabilize the NAKSS movement, calling on anybody with genuine case to use appropriate channels to register their grievances.
He also condemned the alleged announcement to remove the new NAKSS President from office by an aide of the Kano state governor, noting that the call had negated the tenets and principles of democracy.
“We wish to call on those government officials to henceforth redirect their energy and focus on the assignment of their offices and not allow themselves or person to be seen as breeding disunity within the ranks of NAKSS.
“ Henceforth, they are advised to stay clear of meddling into students affairs as they have both right to do so under any circumstance.
