The Vice-Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, has assured the family of a slain student that those responsible for his death will be brought to justice, following the arrest of two suspects shortly after the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor gave the assurance on Friday during a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, Mr David Ocholi Solomon, a 300-level Biochemistry student of the institution, at their residence in Lokoja.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Uredo Omale, the two suspects were apprehended within two hours of the incident by the university’s internal security team and subsequently handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
Usman described the killing as painful, unfortunate and unacceptable, saying the news threw the entire university community into mourning.
The VC, who was attending the 35th Annual National Conference and Convention of the Nigerian Political Science Association at the University of Ibadan when he received news of the incident, expressed the condolences of the university management, staff and students to the bereaved family.
He assured the family that the institution was working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation, adding that anyone found to have played a role in the killing, directly or indirectly, would face the full weight of the law.
Usman reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, violence, criminality and other anti-social activities capable of threatening the lives of students and members of the institution.
He disclosed that security surveillance had been intensified across the campus and surrounding communities, while additional measures would be introduced in the coming days to further strengthen the university’s security architecture.
The Vice-Chancellor also reassured parents, guardians and members of the public that the institution remained committed to providing a safe and conducive environment for teaching, learning and research.
He urged the family to remain strong and support ongoing investigations by providing useful information that could assist security agencies in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Usman commended Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his continued support towards the security of lives and property within the university community.
He also appreciated the Ogohi-Onuh of Anyigba, Alhaji Abu Shaibu Okolo, the Chairman of Dekina Local Government Area, Hon. John Urah Ikani, and security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and security.
Responding on behalf of the family, the deceased’s father, Mr Solomon Idachaba, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for the visit and support shown to the family.
He commended the institution for its swift response to the incident and expressed confidence in its commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
