A moment of brilliance from Aubrey Modiba gave Mamelodi Sundowns a slender but significant advantage in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final after the South African champions defeated FAR Rabat 1-0 in Pretoria on Sunday.
In a tense and tactical contest at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Modiba’s stunning first-half free-kick separated the two sides and ensured Sundowns will travel to Morocco next weekend carrying a narrow lead into the decisive second leg in Rabat.
The South Africans dominated possession for long periods and created the clearer chances, but FAR Rabat showed resilience and defensive organisation to keep themselves firmly alive in the tie ahead of the return encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
With two ambitious clubs chasing continental glory, the opening stages reflected the caution expected in a Champions League final.
Sundowns attempted to impose their usual passing rhythm early on, while the Moroccan visitors remained compact and disciplined, looking to frustrate the hosts and exploit opportunities on the counterattack.
Despite the defensive caution, FAR Rabat almost stunned the home crowd midway through the first half.
Veteran defender Younes Abdelhamid rose highest to meet a cross in the 22nd minute, but his header drifted narrowly wide of the target in what proved to be one of the visitors’ best moments of the match.
That warning appeared to sharpen Sundowns’ urgency.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 37th minute through Modiba, who produced a spectacular strike from a direct free-kick.
The left-back unleashed a powerful effort that flew beyond the reach of the FAR goalkeeper, who managed to get fingertips to the ball but could not prevent it from crashing into the net.
The goal ignited celebrations inside Loftus Versfeld and handed Sundowns the reward their growing pressure deserved.
FAR Rabat attempted to respond before the interval, but the South African side remained composed defensively and carried their lead into halftime.
The visitors emerged with greater attacking intent after the break as coach Alexandre Santos urged his side forward in search of an equaliser
However, while FAR Rabat enjoyed more possession in advanced areas during the second half, they struggled to produce the decisive final touch needed to trouble the Sundowns defence consistently.
Sundowns, meanwhile, looked dangerous whenever spaces opened up.
The hosts should have doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute when striker Brian Leon Muniz broke through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to send his effort agonisingly wide of the post in a major missed opportunity.
