Sunusi’s call for self defence breach of law – IGP

Date:

From Ado Abubakar Musa, Jos

In a swift reaction to the call on the northerners by the Emir of Kano state, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to stand on their feet to protect themselves against the activities of the militant Boko Haram, the police headquarters has yesterday faulted the suggestion by the emir, calling it “a complete breach of law.”

The reaction was made yesterday by the spokesperson of the Nigerian police, Emmanuel Ojuku on the Hausa service of the BBC monitored in Jos, saying that such decision was as simple as taking the law into his hands, which according to him was a total disregard to the constitution of the country.

Ojuku who faulted that whoever called on the people from the north to take arms to protect themselves was not right, saying it would not be accepted.

Asked whether people should fold their hands and allow Boko Haram insurgents to kill them since government could not give them defence as people are being killed every day, Ojukwu responded that, “the law said it is the government that protects the lives and property of the people. The people are not to protect themselves. So it is not advisable for the people to take whatever form of arm to protect them. The government is trying its best to take the control of the situation” , the spokesperson added.
