Super Eagles handler, Eric Chelle has disclosed that the forthcoming 2026 Unity Cup in London will play a major role in shaping his squad selection ahead of Nigeria’s high-profile international friendlies against Portugal national football team and Poland
Mr Chelle said the tournament will provide an opportunity to assess emerging talents and widen the national team player pool ahead of future competitions, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Several players are expected to receive first-time or rare invitations to the national team setup, including Owen Oseni, Rafiu Durosinmi, Philip Otele, Samson Tijani and Tosin Oyedokun.
Chelle explained that the Unity Cup would allow him to evaluate players who fit into his tactical philosophy while also building greater competition within the squad.
“Nigeria is blessed with a lot of talented players, but not everybody can play at the same time. The Unity Cup gives us the chance to observe new players and expand our options,” the coach said.
Following the London tournament, Chelle is expected to name a stronger and more experienced squad for the glamour friendlies against Poland and Portugal, with the latter potentially featuring global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo if selected by the Portuguese national team.
Chelle has also intensified his monitoring of players in the Nigeria Premier Football League as part of efforts to integrate more home-based talents into the national team setup.
His approach signals a broader rebuilding process aimed at creating a more competitive and balanced Super Eagles squad capable of competing strongly on both the continental and global stage.
