The Taraba State governorship aspirant, Prof . Jerome Nyameh has condemned the recent fire incident at Wukari Local Government Secretariat, describing it as “deeply regrettable”.
Nyameh in a statement on Sunday said the fire destroyed documents, files, and the building, with no firefighters present to intervene, highlighting the state’s poor emergency response.
According to the statement, Nyameh stressed that every local government in Taraba should have functional fire service trucks and trained personnel to handle emergencies.
“Yesterday’s fire incident at the Wukari Local Government Secretariat is deeply regrettable. It affected sensitive and non-sensitive documents, files, and the building itself.
“What is even more concerning and worrisome is the complete absence of firefighters to intervene during the incident. This is bad.
“Unfortunately, this situation exists across all local government areas in the state, there is either no fire service presence or very poor equipment and personnel.
“Each local government should have functional fire service trucks and trained personnel to handle such emergencies effectively.
“I called on the authorities to immediately set up a five-member panel comprising a firefighter, DSS , police, and officials from the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment. This panel should investigate the real cause of the incident, assess the extent of the damage, and submit a report within three days.
“Furthermore, every local government in the state must be properly equipped with fire service trucks and trained personnel to prevent and respond to similar incidents in the future,” statement read.
