Teachers in Kuje schools receive training on reading skills

As part of effort towards encouraging continuous learning needed to boost human capital development, the National Action Committee on READ Campaign (NACORC) of the Federal Ministry of Education has trained reading facilitators across secondary schools in Kuje area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

 The facilitators at the event organized by Read Campaign’s Desk of the Education ministry were exposed to certain experiences that will enable them consolidate and modify skills for teaching children how to read.

According to the organisers, the workshop has become imperative due to the need to update the skills of teachers in teaching children to read, especially in this era of declining performance of pupils and students in public exams.

Speaking at the event, the minister of state for Education, Prof. Viola Adaku Onwuliri, described the workshop as one of the greatest effort at human capital development through continuous learning.

Onwuliri, who represented by Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Chike Uwaezuoke, reiterated  essence of teachers to acquire the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and values through exposure to best practices in improving reading culture among pupils and students in the FCT and the country at large.

She urged the participants to re-emphasize government’s sustained support towards inculcation of good reading habits in pupils and students as a tool towards a sustainable service delivery in the education sector.

Also, the minister encouraged them to bring their commitment, discipline, energy and faith to bear in the realization of the noble objectives of the read campaign.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary of the Education ministry, Dr. MacJohn Nwobiala, who was represented by Mrs. Irene Mbanefo, stressed that education and literacy are of immense importance to national development.

Nwaobiala, however decried that the current low level of literacy coupled with poor reading culture and comprehension competencies of learners have greatly contributed to the unimpressive performance of students in the country.

Not left out, Read Campaign Desk officer, Ada Uduku, who noted that the ability is one of the most valuable assets an individual can possess, said efforts are being made nationally and internationally to inculcate good reading habit in people of all ages.
