The Orosun Festival is rooted in the mythology of Olofin, the founder of Idanre, and his wife Orosun. Olofin, also known as Aremetan Ojuedugbofen Olofintoto, was the younger brother of Oduduwa, the founder of the Yoruba race. Orosun, one of Olofin’s wives, was known for her mystical powers, which made her envied by other wives. Her departure from the palace and subsequent settlement at the foot of the hill known today as Orosun hills brought hardship to the town and her people. The oracle revealed that a just woman had been wronged, and her spirit sought appeasement, leading to the worship of Orosun.
The Orosun Festival is celebrated yearly between May and June, depending on the traditional calendar. Today, the festival is both a religious and social celebration, depending on one’s perspective. Devotees of Orosun believe that good things can be achieved through devotion, and that failure to obey the rules of the goddess can result in negative consequences. The festival is led by prominent priests, including High Chief Osolo, Aba Lobu, Aro Olule, Asurin, Anopon, Beeken, and Gbeene, who are assisted by other devotees and priests of Olofin.
