Gratitude

Narrated Abu Hurairah (R. A): The Messenger of Allah, (SAW), said, “Verily, the first thing a servant will be asked about on the Day of Resurrection will be his Blessings. It will be said to him: Have We not given you health in your body and nourished you with cool water to drink?”

Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3358

The Prophet (SAW) said: “Allah is pleased with His servant who, upon eating his food, praises Him (thanks Him for the food), and upon drinking his drink, praises Him (thanks Him for the drink).” Sahih Muslim, 2734

According to the Glorious Qur’an: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]” Q14 :7

“And if you should count the favours of Allah, you could not enumerate them” Q14 :34.

Gratitude or (Shukr) is a fundamental Islamic concept that expresses a believer’s acknowledgment and appreciation for all of Almighty Allah’s countless blessings, no matter how big or small. The Prophet’s teachings emphasize its significance as we learn from a Hadith that being grateful increases our bounties and draws us closer to Allah, The Most High.

Gratitude is not merely a passive feeling but an active expression of our faith and relationship with Allah (SWT). Gratitude as key to faith, teaching believers to thank Allah, The Provider for all blessings and to be grateful to people for their kindness, as ingratitude to others implies ingratitude to Allah (SWT).
