Tinubu’s reforms still seeking relief after three years

Three years into President Bola Tinubu’s administration, his signature reforms — fuel subsidy removal and the naira float — continue to test the resilience of ordinary Nigerians. The policies were introduced as necessary steps to stabilize a strained economy. The adjustment has been significant, and for many citizens, the benefits remain ahead of schedule.

For the average household, the impact has been direct. Transport costs have risen sharply, creating difficult trade-offs for workers and employers alike. Some young people have stepped back from jobs where commuting expenses outweighed wages, while many employers face constraints in adjusting salaries, the N70,000 national minimum wage notwithstanding. Families have made practical changes, such as moving children to schools closer to home. Many car owners now supplement their income by offering rides to manage fuel costs.

Official data suggests inflationary pressures are moderating. Yet on the ground, the experience is mixed. Rice and beans have seen modest declines compared to 2023 and 2024, supported by increased imports, while other essentials like cement, electronics, clothing, and building materials remain elevated. In major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano, housing costs continue to challenge low- and middle-income earners.

Security remains a pressing national concern. In parts of the North, farming communities still contend with extortion by armed groups. Incidents of kidnapping have affected regions across the country. These challenges predate the current administration, and while efforts have been made, progress has been uneven. Attacks on military formations still occur.

There have been notable successes. The joint US-Nigeria operation that neutralized a wanted ISIS commander was a significant milestone, acknowledged by both President Tinubu and President Trump. Still, recent events — including the abduction of over 70 schoolchildren and teachers in Borno and Oyo near this third anniversary — underscore that much work remains. A video of one teacher appealing for help has circulated widely, and their safe return is a national priority.

Reforms require time and public patience, but they also need to show tangible progress. Nigerians were asked to endure short-term difficulties for long-term stability. Three years on, many citizens are eager to see clearer signs of that stability in daily life. Economic adjustments are more sustainable when paired with improved security and targeted support.

Going forward, calibrating these reforms could help. Expanding targeted transport and food support for vulnerable groups, speeding up the deployment of CNG buses, and introducing dedicated housing initiatives for low earners would provide direct relief. On security, continued intelligence-led operations and stronger community protection will be key to restoring confidence for farmers, traders, and families.

Tough reforms can lay the foundation for a stronger Nigeria. After three years, citizens are looking for relief they can measure and safety they can rely on. Delivering both will be critical to the next phase of the Tinubu administration’s agenda.
