In a country where poverty continues to test the resilience of millions, a growing number of women are quietly stepping in to fill the gaps left by governance. Among them stands Dr (Mrs) Esther Tonlagha, a Delta State-based humanitarian whose work is gradually changing the fortunes of many vulnerable Nigerians.
Across Africa, women have often carried the silent burden of community care. From nurturing families to supporting struggling neighbours, they have long served as the backbone of social support. Tonlagha’s story fits squarely into this tradition, but with a wider vision and organised structure that is touching lives beyond the immediate community.
Through the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation, the Delta-born advocate has built a platform aimed at empowering the needy, supporting vulnerable families and nurturing young entrepreneurs.
From her operational base in Effurun, the foundation has quietly expanded its interventions, focusing on youth empowerment, education support and health initiatives, particularly across the Niger Delta.
Tonlagha believes that leadership must be rooted in service and compassion.
She once noted that women have always played critical roles in shaping society through family upbringing and community leadership, even when such contributions go unnoticed.
Her foundation has translated that philosophy into practical programmes.
One of the most visible interventions came in July 2025 when 36 graduates completed vocational training sponsored by the EMT Foundation. The trainees acquired skills in cake-making, fashion design, make-up artistry, gele styling, culinary arts and salon services.
At the graduation ceremony, Tonlagha described the event as a celebration of courage and possibility.
“These are not just skills,” she told the trainees. “They are tools of empowerment. Whether you start a business or teach others, your hands now carry the power to build something meaningful.”
Beyond skills training, the foundation has also invested in entrepreneurship.
In December 2025, 30 young entrepreneurs and market women received N500,000 each to expand their businesses — a N15m empowerment effort aimed at boosting small-scale enterprises.
For many beneficiaries, the programme has been life-changing.
One of them, Onochie Dumebi Elvis, said the support came at a critical stage in his business journey.
“For someone starting a small-scale business, this kind of support is a strength. It will boost everything I am planning to do,” he said.
The foundation’s humanitarian footprint also extends to healthcare.
In a country where millions still lack access to primary healthcare services, the EMT Foundation has organised medical outreaches in remote communities and provided N20m support to about 200 individuals living with sickle cell challenges.
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, represented by Pastor Ambrose Omafuwe at one of the foundation’s events, commended Tonlagha’s humanitarian commitment.
According to him, the programmes represent more than empowerment initiatives.
“This is a statement of hope, dignity and transformation,” he said, citing the foundation’s work in medical outreach and the renovation of the Okenrekonko Cottage Hospital.
Education has also received attention under the EMT Foundation’s interventions.
The group has distributed school bags, books and other learning materials to pupils in communities across the Gbaramatu Kingdom, helping bridge the learning gap among children in underserved areas.
Tonlagha insists the foundation’s mission goes beyond charity.
According to her, the organisation seeks to create long-term opportunities by equipping young people with skills, resources and mentorship required to build sustainable livelihoods.
“At the core of our work is compassion and humanity first,” she said.
For Tonlagha, equality and inclusion are not mere slogans but guiding principles.
She believes every individual deserves the same opportunity to succeed regardless of background, gender, religion or social status.
Through mentorship programmes and vocational training, the foundation has continued to encourage young Nigerians to see themselves as agents of change rather than victims of circumstance.
Observers say the impact of these initiatives is gradually reshaping communities across parts of Delta State.
While government interventions remain crucial, initiatives like the EMT Foundation highlight the growing role of private citizens in driving grassroots development.
For many beneficiaries, Tonlagha represents more than a philanthropist.
She is seen as a quiet force planting seeds of opportunity in places where hope once seemed scarce.
And as Nigeria grapples with youth unemployment and widening social inequalities, such interventions may prove critical in nurturing a generation capable of building a more resilient future.
