Tope Alabi threatens court action over murder allegations

Date:

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has threatened legal action against a Canada-based pastor over social media allegations linking her to the death of fellow gospel minister Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings.

Alabi’s solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, issued a cease-and-desist letter dated October 24, demanding the removal of the disputed publications, a public retraction and an unreserved apology within 24 hours.

The letter identified the operator of the Facebook page, Pastor Tayo Ministries, as Tayo Kumuyi, accusing him of publishing allegations between October 20 and 24 linking the singer to murder and ritual killings involving Toluwanisings and other gospel ministers.

The lawyers described the allegations as false and damaging to their client’s reputation.

“These statements accuse our client of murder and of ritual killing. There is no more serious allegation that can be made against a person, least of all a minister of the gospel. They are false in every particular,” the solicitors stated.

They said Alabi had publicly mourned Toluwanisings following his death and denied any involvement in his death or that of any other person.

The solicitors accused the Facebook page operator of exploiting public grief to damage the singer’s reputation, adding that describing the allegations as spiritual revelations did not place them beyond legal scrutiny.

The letter also cited a subsequent post allegedly directed at Alabi after she issued a public notice warning against defamation on October 23.

Quoting the post, the lawyers wrote, “Tope Alabi, no letter will save you from my hand. Your only option is leaving your hiding place.”

They described the statement as threatening and said it could be used as evidence of continued harassment and defamation.

The lawyers argued that the publications could damage Alabi’s personal reputation, professional standing and ministry, adding that the allegations had attracted comments and shares, with some social media users appearing to believe them.

As part of their demands, the solicitors asked Kumuyi to remove the disputed posts, stop further publication of the allegations and withdraw any requests encouraging others to share them.

They also demanded the preservation of relevant evidence, including recordings, messages, drafts and account records.

The lawyers further requested an unreserved public retraction and apology on the same Facebook page, to remain pinned for 14 consecutive days and receive prominence comparable to the original publications.

They also asked the page operator to provide the factual basis for any allegations he intended to maintain and clarify whether the claims had been reported to the Nigeria Police Force or another competent authority.

The solicitors warned that failure to comply within 24 hours could lead to court proceedings seeking an injunction, damages and legal costs.

They also threatened possible complaints to Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, and referrals of the alleged threats to law enforcement authorities.

However, the lawyers clarified that their letter was not intended to prevent truthful reporting, lawful investigations or legitimate commentary protected by law.

Toluwanisings, whose real name was Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, died on October 14, 2026, aged 41.

Alabi publicly mourned the late gospel minister following his death.

The allegations against Alabi and the alleged threatening post were presented in her solicitors’ letter and have not been independently verified. The letter also does not establish whether any police investigation has been initiated.
