From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna
A young man identified simply as Usman has reportedly killed his 60-year-old biological father, Ali Haruna, in the Shango area of Chanchaga Local Government Area, Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday following a physical altercation. Usman allegedly struck his father during a confrontation, claiming he was acting in defense of his mother, who he alleged was frequently maltreated by the deceased.
The incident took place behind the primary school in Shango, Minna. Eyewitnesses report that during the heated argument, Usman struck a blow that caused Ali Haruna to collapse into a coma.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, witnesses attempted to rush the father to the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna. However, he was confirmed dead upon arrival.
While explaining his actions, Usman claimed that his father’s constant physical abuse of his mother drove him to intervene. He stated that his intention was merely to protect his mother, whom he described as the weaker party in the ongoing domestic disputes.
Efforts to reach the Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Wasiu Abiodun, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as his lines were unreachable.
The suspect is expected to be handed over to the authorities for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
