From Bashir Rabe Mani, Sokoto
The Kano State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the controversial death of Maimuna Sani Salisu, a 13-year-old JSS 2 boarding student at St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.
To ensure absolute transparency, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has constituted a high-powered Special Investigation Panel (SIP) led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DCP Shehu Idris, alongside senior officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice.
The investigation follows an official petition submitted on June 17, 2026, by Nakudu Law Partners on behalf of the deceased student’s mother, Mrs. Nusaiba Rabiu Dan Sheriff.
According to a police statement released by Command Spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the school authorities contacted Maimuna’s parents on June 13, 2026, at around 7:20 PM, claiming she had taken ill and was rushed to the International Clinic, Kano.
It added that when her elder sister arrived at the hospital at 8:19 PM, the attending physician confirmed that the young girl was already dead.
The police revealed that she was subsequently buried the following day in accordance with Islamic rites.
It however, said the family decided to approach law enforcement after receiving wildly conflicting accounts regarding how the teenager died.
“ Initially claimed that Maimuna suffered a fatal asthma attack after arriving late to the school mosque.
“Separate testimonies gathered by the family allege that Maimuna was severely punished by senior students.
“The junior student was reportedly flogged and forced into prolonged kneeling for refusing to sweep, an ordeal that allegedly triggered or severely worsened her medical condition,” the statement read in part.
According to the statement, the Special investigation panel has already moved swiftly, interrogating several key individuals connected to the school environment.
The police confirmed that eight people have already been formally invited and are currently cooperating with the panel
“Statements have been obtained, and medical, forensic, and other evidentiary processes are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding it,” CSP Kiyawa stated.
The Kano State Police Command has assured the grieving family, the school community, and the general public that the joint investigation with the Ministry of Justice will be handled with the utmost diligence and impartiality.
The Command also urged the public to avoid speculation but requested anyone with credible information to come forward, promising that all whistleblowers would be protected under strict confidentiality.
“Anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law, while those exonerated will be cleared accordingly,” the statement concluded, adding that the panel’s final findings will be made public.
