A devastating rainstorm has claimed the lives of a 50-year-old woman, Aisha Sagir, and her four-year-old granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, while destroying multiple houses in the Katsinawa area of Bara Village, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the tragedy on behalf of the state’s Commissioner of Police. According to preliminary reports, the severe weather incident struck the community at approximately 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
Trail of destruction
SP Habib disclosed that the local government area experienced torrential rainfall accompanied by violent winds, which led to the fatal collapse and flooding.
Beyond the tragic loss of life, the storm wreaked havoc on local infrastructure and livelihoods.It destroyed several houses, swept away livestock, and decimated personal valuables worth millions of naira.
Police operatives from the Kirfi Division were immediately deployed to the scene to assess the scale of the damage and maintain public order.
Community in deep shock
Reacting to the incident, a prominent community leader, Hon. Muhammad Bashir Bara (the Dan Galadiman Bara), expressed the profound grief gripping the village.
“We are in deep shock. “We woke up to the terrible tragedy of the flood in our hometown, Bara.
“ The flood caused the loss of two lives, along with the destruction of houses and the loss of livestock and property to the community, the true number of which cannot even be counted right now,” the community leader stated.
Authorities call for vigilance
The State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire people of Kirfi LGA, praying for the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The Police Command assured residents that it is actively collaborating with relevant disaster management agencies to support ongoing response efforts and guarantee security across the affected areas.
In light of the tragedy, SP Habib advised citizens to remain highly vigilant as the rainy season intensifies and urged the public to promptly report weather-related emergencies to security agencies for swift intervention.
