Two members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing dissatisfaction with the outcome of the party’s recently concluded primary elections.
The lawmakers, Mohammed Omadefu, representing Keana Constituency, and Jacob Kudu, representing Nasarawa Eggon East Constituency, formally announced their resignation from the APC through separate letters read on the floor of the House during plenary in Lafia.
Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, who read the letters, said the legislators attributed their defection to what they described as ill-treatment during the APC primaries.
Reacting to the development, Jatau noted that while some party members accepted the outcome of the primaries, others opted to pursue their political ambitions on different platforms. He wished the defecting lawmakers success in their new party.
Meanwhile, the House passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the Nasarawa State Education Trust Fund Law, 2025.
The sponsor of the bill, Abel Bala, said the proposed amendment would boost revenue generation, create employment opportunities and improve the quality of education in the state.
Several lawmakers supported the bill, arguing that it would contribute to economic development and enhance the living standards of residents.
However, Deputy Speaker Mohammed Oyanki urged the House to first address the leadership crisis within the State Education Trust Fund before proceeding with the amendment.
The Speaker subsequently referred the bill to the House Committee on Education for further legislative work and submission of its report.
