Two-storey building collapses in Sokoto metropolis

Date:

From Bashir Rabe Mani, Sokoto

A two-storey building under construction along Bauchi Road, in the heart of the Sokoto metropolis, collapsed at approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
It was gathered that no deaths or injuries were recorded.
The Head of the Sokoto Operations Office for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) covering Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, Alhaji Tukur Abubakar, confirmed the details while speaking to journalists at the scene.
According to Abubakar, disaster was averted because workers on site noticed signs of structural failure moments before the collapse and managed to flee in time.
“We thank God that nobody died as a result of the incident, and no casualty was recorded,” Abubakar stated, confirming that no individuals were trapped under the rubble.
Following the collapse, emergency responders quickly moved in to cordon off the perimeter to prevent secondary incidents and ensure public safety.

Key agencies deployed to the site included Emergency & Rescue – NEMA, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, and both the Federal and Sokoto State Fire Services.
Also, officials from the Sokoto State Ministries of Environment, and Land and Housing.
Abubakar assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of building collapses across Nigeria, a recurring issue that frequently leads to severe casualties and structural losses.
Industry experts continue to advocate for stricter enforcement of building regulations, rigorous quality control on materials, and regular site inspections to prevent future occurrences nationwide.
