Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced that he has initiated legal action against individuals circulating what he described as false and defamatory reports alleging secrecy surrounding the death of a nurse, Mary Habila, at his residence in Ebonyi State.
Speaking on Sunday during an inspection of ongoing construction on the Ebonyi section of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Super Highway, Umahi said he had instructed his legal team to prosecute those responsible for spreading the claims.
The minister condemned what he described as deliberate misinformation by individuals “claiming to be freedom fighters,” stressing that creating content based on falsehoods involving a person’s death was unacceptable.
According to Umahi, the late nurse’s family became concerned after she failed to respond, forced open her room, and immediately contacted doctors from the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), who rushed her to the hospital in an effort to save her life.
“The family broke the girl’s door, called doctors from DUFUTH, who took her to hospital and did everything to revive her, but failed,” he said.
Umahi stated that the incident was promptly reported to the police, dismissing allegations that there was any attempt to conceal the circumstances surrounding her death.
“The family reported the matter to the police, so where is the secrecy?” he asked.
The minister disclosed that the deceased’s parents, who are currently in Ebonyi State, would address journalists and were also preparing to institute legal action against those spreading what he described as false information.
He further revealed that he had directed that an autopsy be conducted to determine the cause of death, noting that the procedure would only proceed with the consent of the deceased’s parents.
Umahi described the late Mary Habila as a dedicated healthcare professional who served at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital and had worked with him for about three years.
“The deceased was a good nurse who checked my medical vital signs and worked with me for three years,” he said.
The minister also dismissed reports linking him to an alleged kidnap suspect said to have been recruited into the Ebonyi State security outfit, Ebubeagu, during his tenure as governor.
He challenged those making the allegations to provide evidence of any relationship between him and the suspect, insisting he had no personal knowledge of the individual.
Umahi maintained that it was impossible for him to know every person recruited into the security outfit while he served as governor.
Reaffirming his opposition to kidnapping, the minister said the crime deserved severe punishment and should never be tolerated under any circumstance.
He concluded that the allegations against him were politically motivated and vowed to defend his reputation through lawful means while pursuing legal remedies against those responsible for spreading the claims.
