The Governing Council of the University of Abuja at its 50th Extra-Ordinary meeting has approved the appointment of Professor Clement Barikuma Innocent Alawa and Professor Sani Muhammad Adam as Deputy Vice-Chancellors Academic and Administration respectively.
A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja yesterday by the Registrar, Mrs. Rifkatu Hoshen Swanta said the approval was follows Senate of the institution meeting for the ratification to enable them serve for the period of two years in the first instance.
The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor C.B.I Alawa, a professor of Animal Production was born on 11th January, 1961 in Bodo-Ogoni, Rivers state. A graduate of Veterinary Medicine from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1988, Professor Alawa holds a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Animal Science from the same University in 1994 and 2003 respectively.
Professor Alawa started his career as an Assistant Research Fellow at the National Animal Research Institute, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Shika- Zaria between 1989 and 1994, where he rose to the rank of a Principal Research Fellow in 2006 and became of Professor in 2009. He was also at the Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA where he spent his Fulbright Fellowship year between 2001 and 2002 before joining the University of Abuja in 2013.
In the course of his career, Professor Alawa has had over 70 publications to his credit which include articles in local and foreign journals, chapters in books in addition to conferences he attended locally and abroad where he presented papers. He has also served on several committees both at ABU and the University of Abuja including as the chair of the University of Abuja Convocation Planning Committee and chair of the University of Abuja Research Grant Committee, amongst others.
The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) who has worked on several internationally funded research projects such as the NAPRI-IDRC (Canada) Survey of Ethno veterinary Practices of Agro pastoralists in Nigeria (1996-2000) and the NAPRI-IAEA Project on Development and Evaluation of Animal Feed Supplementation Packages (1996-2000), is currently working on collaborative research with Professor Jessica Rothman and Dr. Sagan Friant of Hunter College, City University of New York, USA.
Professor Alawa who was until his appointment a member of the University of Abuja Governing Council and is a member of many professional bodies, including the College of Veterinary Surgeon in Nigeria where he became a Fellow in 2014.
He was the immediate past Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and also doubled as Deputy Dean as well as the Head, Department of Animal Health and Production between August 2014 and November 2016.
The new Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Administration, Professor Sani Muhammad Adam, was born on Wednesday 2nd March, 1966 in Jos. He graduated from Bayero University, Kano (BUK) in 1991 with a Bachelor of Laws degree and holds a Master and PhD degree from the University of Jos in 1996 and 2006.
Professor Sani Adam, a professor of Environmental Law, who started his career in the academics at the University of Jos, joined the University of Abuja in 2008 but left the University to take up appointment as the pioneer Dean of Law, Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano in 2014. He returned to the University of Abuja after a successful tenure at the Police Academy in May 2018.
The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) who has about 100 publications to his credit, has supervised LLB, LLM & PhD Projects and Dissertations in addition to conferences where he presented papers.
He has assessed Professorial Papers and has served as external assessor to the National Defence College, Abuja and also drafted and updated the EFCC Academy Curriculum in 2017.
Professor Sani Adam who is a member of professional bodies including the Nigeria Bar Association and the International Bar Association amongst others, was former Head, Department of Private and Islamic Law and the Faculty Representative to the Senate.
