The University of Abuja has organized the 2nd memorial lecture in honour of late General (Dr) Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia who was the pro-chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the University.
In his welcome speech, the Vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Michael Adikwu, explained that when late Ogbemudia was pro-chancellor he contributed tremendously towards the progress of the University.
Adikwu said: “General Ogbemudia’s appointment and assumption of office as a pro-chancellor and chairman of our Governing Council was providential. He brought his very vast wealth of experience to bear on the task of rescuing our university from further descent into possible anomie”.
He said during the Governing Council under the leadership of late General Ogbemudia he was able to fight for the accreditation of the medical courses in the University among other pressing needs of the institution.
The Vice-chancellor noted that late pro-chancellor had done a lot in the area of peace, stability as well as development of the University.
Presenting the theme of the memorial lecture which focused on “Sports for National Economic Development: Beyond the Ogbemudia Example,” the former Governor of old Anambra State, Chief (Dr) Jim Nwobodo, said the Ogbemudia example should be copied and applied in every critical sector of sports management for Nigeria to attain and take her rightful place in sports globally.
The guest lecturer said: “There are a lot we can borrow from the Ogbemudia example in terms of programme design, planning and execution”.
Nwobodo, therefore, emphasised that the private sector driven sports management should be encouraged in order to arrest the presence of the government in sporting activities.
