The Transport Unit of the University of Abuja on Monday organised a one-day workshop/training for vehicle users as well as drivers in the institution.
Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, said the workshop would be a continuous one.
He said his administration would continue train the staff on capacity building to enhance productivity.
Na’Allah also said his leadership would remain committed to move the University to the next level, pointing out that he has “zero tolerance for failure”.
In his welcome address at the workshop, the Head/Coordinator in charge of the Transport Unit, Engr. Jude Nwabueze, said the workshop/training was the first of its kind.
He said: “This workshop/training with the theme “Safety; our common goal” is aimed at reducing the incidence of accidents on our roads, improving the safety of every road user, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the transport system in our University Community”.
He explained that recent survey shows that 90% of road mishaps on Nigerian roads are attributable to human error ranging from negligence, alcohols drug/substance addictions, indiscipline and impatience among other things.
His words: “Regrettably, the numerous lives and property lost to road accident could have been saved if only the drivers /vehicle users adhered strictly to the codes and ethics of driving as prescribed in our laws”.
Nwabueze told the crowd that the Transport Unit was ready to discharge her duties with professionalism, expertise and efficiency in order to meet up with global best practices.
Meanwhile some of the resource persons ranging from FRSC, DRTS (VIO), Police and NDLEA who spoke during the workshop counseled the participants against over speeding, drug addictions and alcohols while plying the roads.
